The so-called Phuket Tuk-Tuk Mafia are taking tourists for a ride, charging more than 10 times the price as their counterparts in Bangkok. However with no efficient public transportation on Phuket, tourists find that they don’t have many choices.
While there are plenty of motorcycles for rent on Phuket, that can bring it’s list of troubles with accidents being all to common. As one poster on a thread discussing the situation at the Thailand QA Forums noted:
…you just dont use tuk-tuks ’cause its a rip off, and I don’t want to die so renting my own bike won’t happen! Phuket and Pattaya is a joke for dead farang on motor bikes!
And from an article last week in The Age in Australia:
The cost of a tuk-tuk from Phuket’s airport to Patong, a journey of 40 kilometres, is 800 baht, about the same price as the bus fare to Bangkok, 852 kilometres away.
