The many unique Thai festivals throughout the year are one of the many reasons people visit the Kingdom. If you are trying to decide when is the best time to visit Thailand,  and you are looking for more than just when the best weather is (December to February btw), then you might like to check out some of the many festivals that are held throughout Thailand each year.

Everybody of course knows about the famed Songkran in April where the whole country stages a water fight that lasts for 3 days or more. Throughout Songkran you cannot go outside during the day in Chiang Mai without being totally drenched. There are no taxis in Chiang Mai either, only tuk tuks and the crowds are always waiting to douse anybody they can. Everybody is fair game and people use all types of water conveying tools from simple buckets to water pistols to large canons to huge ice filled drums in the back of pick-up trucks.

ThaiSnaps has an article listing many Thai festivals held in each month of the year, listing not just the famous Songkran festival in April and the Loy Krathong festival in November, but also the lesser known Wax castle festival and the bizarre Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

Beginning the year, the month of January offers the Chiang Mai Winter Fair in Chiang Mai and the River of Kings Festival in Bangkok. The Chiang Mai winter fair offers booths, music, competitions, and even beauty pageants, while the River of Kings is a bit more formal with a theatrical production describing the history of Thailand.
